The BlackBerry PlayBook uses a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, just like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. 7 inches is fast becoming the default size for first-wave tablets, flying against the trend set by the Apple iPad, which has a larger 9.7-inch screen. What’s the difference in practice? Quite a lot, actually. A 7-inch tablet will be able to fit into the largest of pockets, and even if your skinny jeans can’t hack a tablet, it’s still far more portable than the largely home-bound iPad.

iOS 4.2 beta 2 now available for iPhone, iPad developers

Apple has just seeded the second beta for iOS 4.2 as well as the accompanying Xcode 3.2.5 and SDK. This is the most current version of iOS floating around and, when released to the public, will bring the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch under one iOS roof. The public release of iOS 4.2 is expected this November.

More people are getting hot under the collar about the HTC Desire HD than the HTC Desire Z, but the latter is the closer relative of the original HTC Desire in some key ways. Where the HTC Desire HD ditches the curves of its forefather in favour of a more angular, stark look, the HTC Desire Z looks a lot like its grandaddy. The physical soft keys have been replaced by a row of touch sensitive buttons and the optical trackpad of the HTC Desire Z has been made into a square rather than the original circle, but the genetic aesthetic material is still here in-tact.
