Form factor, Screen & Navigation
The G2 is a gorgeous phone with a brushed steel front and back. It feels very solid when holding it and its 3.7 inch display makes one handed operation a breeze. The signature trackball of the G1 has been replaced with a touchpad. Coming from a Nexus One which has a trackball, I found the touchpad easy to use and it responded well to my thumb movements.

Performance & Battery
The actual use of the phone is great even though the phone has an 800MHz processor. It is a fast phone. The processor has been optimized for this phone and in a speed test run, it performed as good as a 1GHz processor phone or in some cases even better. One thing I do want to mention is that in the time that I have field tested this phone, the battery has performed amazingly well. I have not had issues where half way through my day I need to plug it in to charge it.

Keyboard
The G2 comes with a slide out physical QWERTY keyboard. The keys are more in line with the keys on a real PC keyboard for a more natural feel when typing. The keyboard also comes with 3 hotkeys that can be programmed as shortcuts for applications. I find the keyboard to be cramped and difficult to type on especially when compared to the keyboard on the Epic 4G.

Call Quality
I have not used the phone extensively but in the limited capacity, I found the call quality to be good and have not dropped one call yet.

Camera
The 5 megapixel camera on the phone takes beautiful pictures with no delay in the auto focus that runs standard on the phone.

There is a slight cost to the keyboard though, as the HTC Desire Z is chubbier than both the HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD. At 14.2mm thick, its girth is substantially larger than its Desire stablemates (the original Desire is 11.9mm thick, the Desire HD 11.8mm thick). 14.2mm is still eminently pocketable, but loses the ultra-slim feel of a non-Qwerty phone.

It uses S-LCD, not AMOLED
Thanks to an OLED display shortage — caused in part by the rapidly-increasing popularity of AMOLED-equipped phones like the HTC Desire, most of HTC’s new smartphones use S-LCD displays instead. These more traditional screens use a backlight instead of AMOLED’s self-illuminating pixels. This makes sure that S-LCD screens’ black levels aren’t as deep as those of a top AMOLED, but S-LCD offers better sharpness and comparable viewing angles and brightness.

The HTC Desire Z features a 3.7-inch 800×480 display, just like the vanilla Desire. If you want a bigger screen on your mobile, you’ll have to consider the HTC Desire HD, which sports a humungeous 4.3-inch display.

It’s up-to-date with Android
The HTC Desire Z will ship with Android 2.2 from the off, which won’t be superceded until Android 3.0 lands later this year. The top new features of Android 2.2 include full Adobe Flash 10.1 support and the ability to transmit your phone’s mobile internet connection as a dinky little Wi-Fi hotspot. It makes internet sharing ridiculously easy.

What we’re not sure of yet is how easy it’ll be to get an Android 3.0 update for the HTC Desire Z once the new OS is released. Android 3.0 sees the platform change tact, with a new glossy user interface designed to put an end to custom manufacturer-made UIs like the Desire’s Z’s HTC Sense, so it may be a long wait before devices like the HTC Desire Z get the boost up to 3.0, if at all. We’ll be on the case though.

It’s not quite a top dog on the track
The HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD both use a 1GHz processor, but the HTC Desire Z steps down a rung, with a lower-end 800MHz Qualcomm model. Although a significant slow-down, Android 2.2 is the snappiest version of the operating system yet so you can bank on performance being nippy, especially as it the Desire Z is packed with 512MB RAM.

The camera’s on-par with the HTC Desire
With a 5-megapixel sensor, LED flash and the ability to record 720p video, the HTC Desire Z offers similar camera specs to an original HTC Desire updated to Android 2.2 (thereby adding the ability to record 720p video). We’re hoping for a slight increase in optical quality, as the HTC Desire’s snapper was nothing to shout about, in photo form on Flickr, but we’ll have to wait until we get hold of one ourselves to find out.

3. Save the file to your EVO’s microSD card.

4. Reboot your phone in recovery mode.

4.1 – To reboot phone in recovery mode, all you need to do is, Turn the phone off. Then simply hold the volume down button followed by pressing the power button. The phone is rebooted and displays a white screen with three Android guys.

5. Use the Volume button to select RECOVERY and press the power button again. This will reboot your phone and ready to work in safe mode or recovery mode. A render of a phone with a red triangle and exclamation point indicates that you have successfully entered the recovery mode.

6. Now Hold the ‘volume up’ button and press the power button. Choose applysdcard:updatenew.zip

2. Copy above downloaded file on the root directory of microSD card and rename to update.zip

3. Now power off your phone.

4. Boot your device in recovery mode by holding the trackball and pressing the power button.

5. You’ll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select “Bootloader.”

6. On the next screen, select “Recovery.”

7. Now Nexus One phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.

8. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.

9. Now using the trackball choose “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and let things run their course.

10. When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.

Max out your megapixels
The Nokia N8 uses nifty compression algorithms with its photos so that even 12-megapixel photos aren’t all that gigantic in megabyte terms. Go for gold, set your Nokia N8 to capture the full 12 megapixels.

Keep the sun behind you if possible
Unless you’re going for a deliberately arty, flawed look to your photos, you want to keep your light source, the sun, out of shot. Metering with such an intense light source in shot is nigh-on impossible.

Explore advanced features
The Nokia N8 gives you control over many of the camera’s settings, including white balance, contrast, Light sensitivity (ISO) and exposure levels. They may sound intimidating but the Nokia N8 makes them simple, with just a few settings for each. For more info on these options, check out our photo jargon feature.

Two hands are better than one
In order to get the most detail out of your photos, you need the Nokia N8 to be as still as possible at the point you take the picture. Pressing down the shutter can make you jog the phone a little if you use just the one hand, so use two if possible to steady the phone.

Avoid using flash unless you need to
The Nokia N8’s Xenon flash is a cut above the LED flashed used in most mobile phone cameras, but it’s best to avoid using it unless necessary. Flashes create an unnatural look by introducing a new light source, changing what you’re looking at drastically.

Don’t use digital zoom
Digital zoom doesn’t create new detail. Instead, it just zooms into the pic, as you might do within a photo editing program. The Nokia N8 only offers 2x zoom for this reason, but you’re better of trying to move closer to your subject than using the zoom.

Don’t be afraid of editing
Pro photographers tweak their shots using photo programs like Photoshop all the time. Changing contrast and brightness levels can turn a half-decent photo into a great once, so don’t be afraid to have a tinker on your computer.

Add extreme effects in post
The Nokia N8 lets you take black & white and sepia photos, but we’d recommend adding these effects after taking the photo — then you have a normal version, to see whether it actually looks better with the colour effect applied.
