At Apple’s press conference on 1 September, Steve Jobs bigged-up Ping’s potential to reach 160 million users — the number of people that use Apple’s iTunes software, apparently. After the first two days of Ping’s launch, a million users had signed-up. Apple itself released this figure, but we’re left wondering whether it met their initial expectations.
The big benefit Ping has is that its audience is already in place, ready to be fed the new network through a simple software update. Less than a week old, Ping’s a social networking newborn, but even with its accessibility bonuses, it’s still going to have a job convincing users to take their eyes off Facebook and Twitter for a minute or two.
Ping is integrated into iTunes, and will be accessible from your iPhone once the iOS 4.1 update lands. It lets you see, and hear, what your friends are listening to, check out the concerts they’re going to, and discover more music based on the tastes of your buddies. If you want to become part of the million-person army, you can check out Ping in iTunes now.
