Speed boost
The most common bit of feedback we get about Android 2.2 from readers is that it’s much faster than Android 2.1. Serious speed optimisation is a clear sign that a platform is coming to maturity — and with Android, it couldn’t come too soon. Thanks to its super-quick Hummingbird processor, the Samsung Galaxy S is already slick, but with Android 2.2 it’ll let you tear along as fast as your fingers will allow.

Wi-Fi internet sharing
A built-in feature of Android 2.2 is the ability to transmit your mobile internet connection as a miniature Wi-Fi network, so that other devices nearby can hook into it. Given it’s just like tethering in most respects, we’re not sure what the networks will make of it when more phones hook into the Android 2.2 club, but for now we say make the most of it!

Better GPS
Alongside getting Android 2.2, the Samsung Galaxy S has been optimised to make GPS navigation when on foot more reliable. Most dedicated GPS software is designed for use in a car, or other fast-moving vehicle, so it can get confused when you’re moving slowly — walking, in other words. Your Samsung Galaxy S’s internal GPS will now also use information harvested from the phone’s compass so that it’ll always know your direction of travel, giving much more accurate position updates.

Pinch-to-zoom home screens
We’re surprised this one wasn’t included in the Samsung Galaxy S’s custom UI from the off, as it features in several other Android UIs, including HTC Sense. From any home screen, you’ll be able to use the pinch-to-zoome manoeuvre to get a zoomed-out view that shows you all your home screens, in miniature form, at once. It’ll add a very quick and easy way to move between home screens too, saving your thumb some work.

SD card app installations
This is a feature that has to be enabled by developers, but could, in time, open up the Android app scene no end. At present, the Samsung Galaxy S can only install apps to its internal memory, which is just a gig and change rather than the 16GB you might expect. With SD card installations, you’ll be able to forget about space restrictions and install hundreds of apps. Space restrictions have held back the Android app space. Where some iPhone apps are hundreds of megabytes each, an Android developer would be foolish to make an app more than a few megs in size.

Flash
Could this be the most important trump card Android has over its fierce Apple-flavoured rival the iPhone 4? Android 2.2 brings full Adobe Flash support, which isn’t going to come to Apple’s phone series any time soon. Flash eats away at your battery like no-one’s business, but it’s a powerful platform because so much of the web is created using it. Video content is often displayed through a Flash interface, and masses of web games rely on the platform. For the full web experience, you want Android 2.2.

Google Groups
Last, and perhaps least (but it’s still a goodie!), Google web services integration with the Android OS will now pull-in your Google Groups as well as your contacts. Google Groups are the preserve of the Google Mail power user, but if that’s you, Android 2.2 will let you take even more of your online Google life with you.
