Screen
Both of these phones are screen beauties, using a version of the AMOLED screen tech, which offers deeper blacks and better colour reproduction than TFT equivalents. The Samsung Galaxy S uses Super AMOLED, Samsung’s next-gen take on AMOLED which melds the touchscreen element with the display pane itself, making the whole screen unit thinner and, according to Samsung, giving screen performance a boost too.

The Samsung Galaxy S also gets you an extra half inch of screen space over the Nokia N8, and an additional 153,600 pixels. The question to ask yourself is — do you want the luxury screen of the Samsung Galaxy S, or the additional pocketability of a 3.5-inch screen? In purist’s terms though, there’s only one winner here.
Winner — Samsung Galaxy S

Power
The Nokia N8 is curiously low-powered, which makes us wonder whether Nokia has worked very hard on Symbian^3 optimisation alongside Symbian Corporation to cut-down the need for a cutting-edge 1GHz processor. The Nokia N8 uses a 680MHz processor, which only be seen on a mid-range or budget Android.

The Samsung Galaxy S uses a fab 1GHz Hummingbird processor, which is even more powerful than the highly popular 1GHz Snapdragon seen in the HTC Desire and Google Nexus One. Both offer 3D hardware acceleration for gaming too, but currently neither Android or Symbian^3 offer top-flight gaming experiences to make the most of it.
Winner — Samsung Galaxy S

Memory
16GB editions of the Samsung Galaxy S and Nokia N8 are available, and it’s these we’ll be considering here. On top of this generous internal memory chip, you can bulk-up your mobile’s memory with a microSD card — sizes up to 32GB. So that’s 48GB maximum potental memory, bigger than what’s on offer in the most expensive iPhone 4.

The downside of the Samsung Galaxy S is that you can only install apps to the main internal memory and microSD card when this has been enabled by the developer — but then there are so few apps available for the brand-new Symbian^3 operating system that we can’t praise the Nokia N8 too much in response.
Winner — Draw

Video skills
We once called the Samsung Galaxy S as the best Android video player ever, but it has found a fierce rival in the Nokia N8. Both can play all sorts of video files, including XviD, DivX, H.263, H.264, MP4 and WMV, and both offer a way to get your video from your Nokia N8 to your TV.

The Samsung Galaxy S relies on the DLNA-powered AllShare feature, which will stream video to a compatible device (inc. games consoles, some DVD players and some TVs) over Wi-Fi. The Nokia N8 takes a simpler route, offering you an HDMI output (but no wireless DLNA). What would we prefer? HDMI, by a country mile. Video streaming may be the future, but take it over to your friend’s house and you’d likely spend half an hour trying to get it to work before giving up. A micro USB to HDMI cable for the Samsung Galaxy S is reportedly in the works, but we haven’t seen it available anywhere yet.

The Samsung Galaxy S benefits from the extra power of the Samsung Galaxy S’s Hummingbird processor, but the Nokia N8 can handle outputting 720p video, which we’re more than happy with. It’s a close run race, but the ease of use of the Nokia N8’s media centre skills wins it the gold.
Winner — Nokia N8

Apps
Using a brand new OS, Nokia N8 has a tough app-laden road ahead of it. The development tools for the platform were unleashed back in April 2010, and the phone has already been added to the Ovi Store — hundreds are already available to browse through, so head over to the Ovi Store and select the Nokia N8-00 in the handset filter to see what’s in-store.

It’s a way behind the Samsung Galaxy S though, which has the whole 100,000+ app Android Market to plunder. We expect the quality of Symbian^3 and Android apps to roughly normalise, as developers port between the various smartphone platforms, but for now the Samsung Galaxy S has the upper hand.
Winner — Samsung Galaxy S

Camera and video
The Nokia N8’s last chance to get one over on the Samsung Galaxy S super-phone is a good one. Its camera is much, much better than the Samsung Galaxy S’s. The Nokia N8 offers 12 megapixels, a Xenon flash, manual ISO control and a whacking great big sensor for higher-quality images. It can capture great quality 720p video too.

The Samsung Galaxy S falls into the traditional Android trap, with a camera that doesn’t match-up to the rest of its features. It’s a 5-megapixel model with touch focus, and can produce decent photos in good light, but without a flash it struggles under less than optimum conditions. And even on a bright, sunny day, it can’t touch the fantastic Nokia N8.
