The N8 is Nokia’s last chance to revive the Nseries before it’s truly left eating the dust kicked-up by its Android and iPhone rivals. Here are the 10 reasons why the Nokia N8 may just pull it off.

It has a fab camera
Our first point is, in our opinion, the most important one. The Nokia N8’s camera is a world-beater. Its 3000×4000 12-megapixel sensor is more advanced than any we’ve seen before on a mobile — it’s bigger than its rivals, which will result in improved picture quality. Add to this the Xenon flash and wealth of camera control options and you have an unbeatable combo.

It records 720p video
Next year, we expect 1080p video recording to take off as mobile processors beef up even more, but for now 720p is king. It’s all-too easy to think that one phone’s 720p video is as good as another’s, but the Nokia N8’s ultra-high quality sensor will come in handy here too, boosting capture quality into the stratosphere. We’ll be back with some closer video comparison guides soon, to see how good the Nokia N8’s video chops really are.

Symbian^3 is new and exciting
For the last two years, we’ve groaned every time we’ve checked-out a new Symbian phone, as the OS continued to fall behind rivals like Android and iPhone. Symbian^3 is here to blast the ageing OS black into the present. Widgets are in, customisation is key and next-gen apps are on our doorstep. The Symbian-flavoured future just got a lot more interesting.

It has a great capacitive touchscreen
Other than relying on the decrepit Symbian S60 operating system, Nokia’s obsession with resistive touchscreens was a big part in the downfall of the Nseries. Thanks to these pressure-sensitive touchscreens, the Nokia N97 and N97 Mini felt well behind the times. The Nokia N8 uses a capacitive screen, just like all the other big players these days, including the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S.

Nokia’s back on track
With a new OS, fab camera and capacitive touchscreen, it looks as though Nokia’s Nseries may be back on track. This should mean that the Nokia N8 is supported more ferociously than the last handful of Nseries phones. More updates, more improvements and new features could be on the way, as long as the Nokia N8 sells as well as Nokia hopes.

It comes with 16GB of internal memory
While memory is very cheap these days, very few top smartphones come with a decent amount of it. The iPhone gets a pass, with 16GB minimum, but almost all Androids are woefully under-equipped out of the box. Not so with the Nokia N8 though. It has 16GB built-in, which can be expanded by an additional 32GB using the microSD slot.

It’ll output HD video to your TV
Thanks to the built-in HDMI port, your Nokia N8 can output video directly to your TV. With XviD, DivX and a slew of other codecs that the Nokia N8 is ready to play, it’s a mini media centre ready to let you take your movie/TV collection around with you. This is where that 16GB of internal memory really comes in handy…

It offers Flash support
The Nokia N8’s Flash support isn’t quite as good as the full Flash 10.1 support offered by Android 2.2, but you do get Flash lite 4.0. This is the version of Flash tailored for mobile devices, to let you view Flash-powered content online. It’s still a powerful little addition to have, and well worth adding to your mental tick-box if you’re a big internet trawler.

It comes in several colours
Back in the day, you could customise your phone as much as you liked with interchangeable fascias. You could show off your lack of taste with a bright pink neon case, leave it black or anything in-between. Those days are gone though, and now you have virtually no control over how your phone looks, short of burying it in a case. Not so with the Nokia N8 — it’s available in a handful of colours including green, blue, orange, silver and dark grey.

It’s not an iPhone
Are you tempted by the omnipresent iPhone, but would really like to try out something else? The Nokia N8 is a top pick, especially if you enjoy taking the odd snap. While not as ultra-stylish as the iPhone 4, the Nokia N8 is a charming underdog that deserves more attention. And remember, no matter how good your friends say the iPhone 4’s camera is, this one’s better.
