Evernote (Free)
BlackBerry’s premier note-taking app, Evernote wants to become an “extension of your brain”, letting you snap photos, make text notes and record voice memos while you’re out and about. What makes Evernote so good is how easy it makes note-taking, and how quick sifting through your old notes is. You simply scroll through them as a stream of updates — perfect for the BlackBerry Torch’s touchscreen and optical trackpad.

WhatsApp Messenger (Free)
This cheeky little app lets you send text messages over a data connection rather than the standard SMS network, bypassing the 10+ pence cost you normally have to pay for a text message. Its key drawback is that your recipient has to have the app installed too, but if your primary texting buddy is up for getting WhatsApp Messenger, you’ll save a load of money if your monthly texting allowance can’t soak up all your texting habits.

WiFi Media Backup (£3.99)
We all like to think that our data is secure when we leave it on a hard drive or memory stick, but is it? Phones get stolen, memory cards corrupted and portable hard drives smashed (we have terrible butter fingers). This generation’s solution isn’t to backup, backup and backup again using physical media, but to shove all your important stuff up in the cloud — virtual storage, in other words. WiFi Media Backup saves all your photos, video and voice notes to your own version of “the cloud”, your computer. It does so over Wi-Fi, so you don’t have to worry about data usage. As long as you have a home Wi-Fi network, it’s a winner.

Documents to Go (£5.99)
The BlackBerry Torch 9800’s mini-Qwerty keyboard makes it a perfect partner for office work on the go, and although not an official Microsoft Office companion, Documents To Go can handle all of your Office files with ease, from .docx documents to .xlsx spreadsheets. There’s also a desktop computer sync app, to make moving files between your computer and BlackBerry Torch 9800 as simple as can be.

Shazam (Free)
A favourite among smartphone show-offs, Shazam is an app that can identify any tune within just a handful of seconds. Just use your BlackBerry Torch 9800’s to snag a snippet of the tune being played, from within the Shazam app, let it transfer to Shazam’s servers and then wait for the response. It’s eerily accurate, even when there’s a bit of background noise, and is the perfect solution for cheating in the music round of a pub quiz.
