Step 2: Launch ODIN v1.85.

Step 3: Switch your device off, hold Volume Up and Volume Down to place your device into Download Mode and plug in your device to your computer via USB cable.

Step 4: Once ODIN recognizes your device, click the PDA button and navigate to netchip-cwm-update2.tar. Click on Start. netchip-cwm-update2.tar will now be flashed to your phone and it will reboot.

Step 5: Once you’ve rebooted, press and hold Volume Up, the Home Button and the Power Button to enter recovery mode.

Step 6: If everything is running smoothly, you should now have entered ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery.

Step 7: Navigate to install zip from sd card > choose zip from sdcard > su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip

Step 8: Finally, Reboot your Note by choosing reboot system option from main menu.

Windows users: be sure to install the C++ redistributables as well otherwise the tool won’t work.

Step 2: Boot your Samsung Stratosphere into Download Mode. You can do this by turning your phone off and then powering it on while holing Volume Down button.

Step 3: Your device will say Download Mode Do Not Turn Off Target. At this moment, you must connect your phone to your computer with USB cable.

Windows users only: After following above step, navigate to folder you extracted in Step 1 > Drivers > zagig.exe. You will need to setup drivers using this; click on Install Driver when it asks and then replug your phone and reboot your PC if you need to.

Step 4: Download the following files:

Stratosphere Root.zip
Stock Kernel.zip

Extract their contents to the same folder you extracted Heimdall to in Step 1.

Step 5: Launch a terminal window (or Command Prompt for Windows), navigate to folder in Step 1 and type the following:

heimdall detect

If you device is detected, type:

heimdall flash –kernel root-zImage

A custom kernel will be flashed to your device. It will now reboot with a yellow ! triangle symbol.

Step 6: Enable USB Debugging from Settings > Applications > Development.

Step 7: Ensure that your phone is detected and attached to your computer:

You must now remount file system:

Step 8: Push required files to the phone:

Step 9: Change permissions for su and busybox:

Step 10: That’s it! Your device will now be rooted!

Step 2: Connect your smartphone to your PC with a USB cable and copy over the .zip file you downloaded in Step 1 to the root of phone’s SD card i.e. the parent directory of said phone’s SD card. Once copied, disconnect your phone from the PC.

Step 3: Download and install ROM Manager on your GSII.

Step 4: Launch ROM Manager. Now tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and pick Samsung Galaxy S II from the list of smartphones. Your phone will reboot.

Step 5: Once rebooted, open up ROM Manager again and tap on Reboot Into Recovery.

Step 6: Your phone will reboot once again, this time into a special mode called ClockworkMod Recovery Mode. You will see different options in this mode; using your phone’s volume keys, scroll down to backup and restore and make a backup of your smartphone’s current state.

Step 7: Backing up takes time. Once the process is finished, scroll down to wipe data/factory reset. Similarly, scroll down to advanced using volume keys/home button and wipe Dalvik cache.

Step 8: Now this is where we flash the ROM: scroll down to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > MIUI-1.7.29-SGS2-beta32.zip. MIUI will now be flashed to your GSII.

Step 9: Flashing really doesn’t take too long; you must now reboot system from the main menu of CWM recovery. If you followed the steps correctly, your phone will now boot into MIUI.

7-inch screen
With a 7-inch (1024×600 pixels) screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is too big to be considered a hybrid device (like the 5-inch Dell Streak), but it’s significantly smaller than the Apple iPad. It’s even small enough to fit into some jeans pockets, although we wouldn’t recommend carrying it around in a pocket all the time, unless you’re a fan of unsightly bulges on your person.

Video chat is in
Unlike Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab features two cameras, one on the front and one on the back, making it ready to make VoIP video calls and other online video chats. The back snapper is a 3.2-megapixel model, with autofocus and an LED flash, while the “video chat” front-facing camera is a 1.3-megapixel jobbie.

It has full access to the Android Market
This is the detail that originally got us excited about the Samsung Galaxy Tab. We had seen Android tablets in the flesh before, but never one that packed-in full Android Market access. The Samsung Galaxy Tab will have access to as many apps as any other Android 2.2 device (tens of thousands, if you’re wondering), although thanks to its size and screen resolution, it may encounter a few more rogue compatibility issues than your average 3.x-inch Android smartphone.

16GB memory built-in as standard
The Samsung Galaxy Tab will come in two main editions, a 16GB and 32GB model. This storage is expandable with a microSD card slot, using cards up to 32GB in size. With the maximum 64GB storage packed-in, you could fit around 40 days’ worth of near-CD quality music, around 182 TV episodes or 80 DivX movies.

It’s a phone too
Thanks to Google’s built-in Android restrictions, Samsung had to add cellular functionality to the Samsung Galaxy Tab to get it full Android Market access. So, you can make calls with the Samsung Galaxy S, if you drop in the right SIM card. Unless you’re very large, you’ll look a bit odd with it plastered onto your face as you walk down the street.

It’s connected up to the eyeballs
Just like a high-end smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Tab features Wi-Fi in all flavours (b/g/n), 7.2Mbps HSDPA for 3G mobile internet and A-GPS for navigation apps like Google Maps. Bluetooth 3.0 is also included, which lets Bluetooth piggy-back off your Wi-Fi connection for high-speed transfers.

Vital Statistics

The Samsung Fascinate weighs 4.16 ounces and measures 4.92 x 2.53 x 0.39 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7 hours of talk time, and up to 312 hours (13 days) of standby time. It runs on the CDMA 800/1900 frequencies as well as EV-DO, Rev A 3G frequencies.

There’s also a PowerVR SGX540 graphics accelerator, giving you HD video playback and plenty of polygon-pushing power. Few Android games so far will make full use of it though, sadly.

Screen
Samsung has wowed us this year, with the beautiful Super AMOLED screens of the Samsung Galaxy S and Wave. Such screens don’t come cheap though, so we weren’t hugely surprised when we learnt that the 7-incher of the Galaxy Tab is a standard TFT model.

Using a 1024×600 resolution, it’s not a super-high pixel density screen like the iPhone 4’s, but it is comparable to the iPad. Samsung has done its best to make the Tab feel like its not lagging behind its Galaxy S cousin — the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s TFT display is very bright, with some early impressions suggesting it’s almost on-par with AMOLED. It’s not king of the jungle, but it’s not bad.

Phone skills and connectivity
Google has made having cellular capabilities (making phone calls, basically) a requirement for any device wanting full access to the Android Market, which the Samsung Galaxy Tab has. It’s a bit big to fit in your pocket and take around with you 24/7, but this hybrid-sized tablet-phone can make calls.

This isn’t what impresses us about the Samsung Galaxy Tab — we’re not planning on calling home with that great big hunk of gadgetry against our ears. It’s the inclusion of all the latest connectivity standards that gives the Samsung Galaxy Tab its bite.

Wireless “n” support is in, giving you a connectivity range of up to 100m if used with a n-capable router, and Bluetooth 3.0 features too. Bluetooth 3.0 uses Wi-Fi to supplement transfer speeds, avoiding the sluggish feel long-term Bluetooth users will be all-too familiar with.

On the 3G side, you have 7.2Mpbs HSDPA — enough to max-out the connection you’re likely to get from any UK carrier at the moment, while EDGE and GPRS are on standby if you enter a 3G blackspot. All bases are covered.

Apps
The Android Market is massive, with more than 100,000 apps on offer in total. But the Samsung Galaxy Tab isn’t the sort of device that most app makers had in mind when making their apps.

Until now, Android devices haven’t tended to skip past the 854×480 mark, in screen resolution terms, and those that have haven’t offered full Android Market support. We haven’t yet had a chance to check out how existing apps cope with the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s relatively massive 7-inch 1024×600 pixel screen, but we imagine more than just a few will have more than just a few problems with it.

The Android OS will soon become much more tablet-friendly though, with truckloads of tablets using the OS heading to market. Android tablet apps will get there soon — they’re just not quite “there” yet.

Cameras
The Samsung Galaxy Tab offers two cameras — or “two more than the iPad”, as Samsung might put it. These will enable video calling and simple taking of snaps.
